The NYU Abu Dhabi Institute Revisits Its Tenth Anniversary Series Online

The NYU Abu Dhabi (NYUAD) Institute is bringing back five talks that originated from its tenth anniversary programming in 2018. The online series allows the community to gain a deeper insight into a variety of topics and conversations from the safety of their own homes.

The Institute has made a range of its past talks and lectures available to view during the outbreak of COVID-19, offering intellectual diversion for audiences across the globe. Available on its YouTube channel, topics in this series include the UAE’s cultural scene, the UAE Artificial Intelligence strategy, the concept of philanthropy in the region, a history-making multi-organ transplant program, and the development of the Arab literary scene.

Notable speakers in these talks include Minister of Culture and Youth Her Excellency Noura Al Kaabi; Minister of State for Digital Economy and AI His Excellency Omar bin Sultan Al Olama; Director-General at Sandooq Al Watan Mohamed T. Al Qadhi; Chief Executive Officer of Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi Dr. Rakesh Suri; Chief of the Surgical Subspecialties Institute of Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi Dr. Bashir Sankari; and Lebanese novelist, critic, and playwright Elias Khoury.

Established in 2008 as a center of advanced research, scholarly, and creative activity in Abu Dhabi, The NYU Abu Dhabi Institute assembles academics, professionals, and leaders from around the world to its academic conferences and public program to discuss research areas and topics of local and global significance.

The UAE has embarked on a number of ambitious initiatives to create a vibrant cultural scene. Through commissioned art projects, educational programs, infrastructural development, and cultural diplomacy, a variety of local and international organizations have created spaces for engagement, creativity, and social change. What role do policies focusing on women, youth and national development play in the cultural field in the UAE? How do top-down initiatives interact with marginal spaces and non-state actors?
