NYU Abu Dhabi Researchers Develop Tool To Enhance Cold-Temperature Cancer Surgery
Researchers at NYU Abu Dhabi (NYUAD) have developed an innovative tool that enhances surgeons’ ability to detect and remove cancer cells during cryosurgery, a procedure that uses extreme cold to destroy tumors. This breakthrough technology involves a specialised nanoscale material that illuminates cancer cells under freezing conditions, making them easier to distinguish from healthy tissue and improving surgical precision. Detailed in the study Freezing-Activated Covalent Organic Frameworks for Precise Fluorescence Cryo-Imaging of Cancer Tissue in the journal of the American Chemical Society, the Trabolsi research group at NYUAD designed a unique nanoscale Covalent Organic Framework (nTG-DFP-COF) that responds to extreme cold by increasing its fluorescence. This makes it possible to clearly differentiate between cancerous and healthy tissues during surgery. This advancement not only improves the accuracy and safety of cryosurgical procedures—helping surgeons preserve more healthy tissue while removing cancer cells—but also combines diagnostic and treatment functions into one platform. This could reduce the need for repeat surgeries and speed up patient recovery. “We believe this is a transformative tool that could revolutionise cancer surgery,” said Farah Benyettou, Ph.D., a research scientist in the Trabolsi Research Group at NYU Abu Dhabi. “By making tumor removal more precise, this technology has the […]

NYU Abu Dhabi Researchers Identify Key Immune Differences That Make One West African Ethnic Group Less Susceptible To Malaria
A team of researchers at NYU Abu Dhabi has uncovered how genetic and lifestyle factors influence immune responses to malaria in children from two large West African ethnic groups. The study found that children from the Fulani group have a distinct immune response to malaria than their Mossi counterparts, with key differences in immune cell activity offering greater protection. Malaria susceptibility varies among African ethnic groups, but the reasons behind these differences have remained unclear. Africa has the world’s greatest genetic and environmental diversity, which affect disease susceptibility, yet its populations are underrepresented in genomic research. The Fulani, a nomadic group with a culture of herding and a dietary reliance on livestock-sourced foods, such as milk, have long been observed to have better protection against malaria compared to other groups. In their study, Single-cell Transcriptomics Reveals Inter-ethnic Variation in Immune Response to Falciparum Malaria, published in the American Journal of Human Genetics, NYUAD researchers and collaborators in Burkina Faso analyzed immune cells from 126 children—comparing the less malaria susceptible Fulani group with the more-susceptible Mossi group. Their findings showed that Fulani children’s monocyte cells, critical for the initial immune response, were less inflammatory than those of Mossi children, thereby protecting […]

Researchers Identify Effective Materials For Protecting Astronauts From Harmful Cosmic Radiation On Mars
Researchers have identified specific materials, including certain plastics, rubber, and synthetic fibers, as well as Martian soil (regolith), which would effectively protect astronauts by blocking harmful space radiation on Mars. These findings could inform the design of protective habitats and spacesuits, making long-duration Mars missions more feasible. Dimitra Atri, Investigator, Center for Astrophysics and Space Science and Group Leader of the Mars Research Group at NYU Abu Dhabi’s Center for Astrophysics and Space Science, and lead author Dionysios Gakis from the University of Patras in Greece, report these new findings in “Modeling the effectiveness of radiation shielding materials for astronaut protection on Mars,” appearing in the journal The European Physical Journal Plus. Using computer modeling to simulate the radiation conditions on Mars, the researchers tested various standard and novel materials to see which best shielded cosmic radiation and determined that compound materials like certain plastics, rubber, and synthetic fibers would all perform well. Martian soil (regolith) was also somewhat effective and could be used as an extra layer of protection. In addition, they demonstrated that the most widely used […]

The SEO Lexicon
The SEO Lexicon refers to the specific vocabulary and terms used within the field of Search Engine Optimization (SEO). Understanding and using these terms correctly can greatly enhance your SEO strategy by making your content more relevant and appealing to your target audience. Key Points on the Use of Lexicons in SEO: Definitions and Technical Terms: An SEO lexicon includes essential terms such as “301 redirect,” “bounce rate,” “backlinks,” and “click-through rate (CTR),” among others. Each term has a specific meaning and relevance in SEO practices. For example, a 301 redirect refers to a permanent redirection from one URL to another, which is crucial for maintaining SEO value when URLs change. Humanizing Content: Using lexicons that resonate with your target audience can make your content feel more personalized and relatable. This involves incorporating regional phrases or dialects that your audience uses. For instance, using “y’all” for a Southern U.S. audience or “crisps” for a British audience can create a stronger connection. Competitive Edge: Small businesses can leverage specific lexicons to compete against larger companies by targeting niche keywords that reflect regional or cultural vernacular. For example, a local shoe store in Ohio might use “tennis shoes” instead of the more generic “sneakers” […]
NYUAD Researcher Receives National Science Foundation Grant To Study The Role Of Tiny Diatoms In Protecting Endangered Marine Animals
NYU Abu Dhabi (NYUAD) Associate Professor of Biology Shady Amin has received a grant of more than USD 500,000 from the National Science Foundation (NSF). He will lead a project that is aimed at elevating the understanding and awareness of the essential role played by diatoms, the tiny microalgae that can live in oceans or in symbiosis with endangered marine animal hosts like whales, dolphins, dugongs, and manatees and play a fundamental role in maintaining Earth’s delicate ecosystem. Diatoms are microalgae that produce as much as a fifth of Earth’s oxygen from carbon dioxide through photosynthesis and support fisheries in coastal zones. One group of diatoms lives on the skin of marine animals and enables their survival by fighting off skin infections. These are unique from diatoms that live in seawater in that they largely cannot survive without their animal host. Because of this, these skin-dwelling diatoms are endangered like their hosts; if the hosts go extinct, the diversity of these diatoms – and their oxygen-producing capability – will also be lost. In the NSF-funded project, titled “Standing on the shoulders of giants: Phylogeny, systematics, and adaptation of marine epizoic diatoms to endangered megafaunal hosts,” Professor Amin’s team will sample […]

NYU Abu Dhabi Researchers Discover Tumor Suppressor Protein Par-4 Triggers Unique Cell Death Pathway in Cancerous Cells
A team of researchers at NYU Abu Dhabi, led by Professor Sehamuddin Galadari, has discovered that the tumor suppressor protein Prostate apoptosis response-4 (Par-4) can cause a unique type of cell death called ferroptosis in human glioblastoma – the most common and aggressive type of brain tumor – while sparing healthy cells. This new understanding has the potential to inform the development of novel treatments for various hard-to-treat cancers and neurodegenerative diseases. Ferroptosis is triggered by the iron-mediated production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and subsequent lipid peroxidation, which plays a crucial role in shrinking cancerous tumors. This is the first time that Par-4, already known for killing cancer cells through apoptosis – a form of programmed cell death – has been shown to promote ferroptosis in glioblastoma cells. The tumor suppressor protein Par-4 is widely expressed across species, but is often reduced, mutated, or inactivated in the presence of various cancers. In the study “Tumor suppressor Par-4 activates autophagy-dependent ferroptosis,” recently published in the journal Communications Biology, the researchers identified that Par-4 plays an unanticipated role in promoting ferroptosis-mediated cancer regression. They demonstrated that Par-4 triggers the activation of ferritinophagy (autophagic degradation of ferritin) through the nuclear receptor co-activator […]

NYU Abu Dhabi Researchers Present New Evidence For How Heat Is Transported Below The Sun’s Surface
A team of solar physicists at NYU Abu Dhabi’s Center for Astrophysics and Space Science (CASS), led by Research Scientist Chris S. Hanson, Ph.D., has revealed the interior structure of the sun’s supergranules, a flow structure that transports heat from the sun’s hidden interior to its surface. The researchers’ analysis of the supergranules presents a challenge to the current understanding of solar convection. The sun generates energy in its core through nuclear fusion; that energy is then transported to the surface, where it escapes as sunlight. In the study “Supergranular-scale solar convection not explained by mixing-length theory” published in the journal Nature Astronomy, the researchers explain how they utilized Doppler, intensity and magnetic images from the helioseismic and magnetic imager (HMI) onboard NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) satellite to identify and characterize approximately 23,000 supergranules. Since the sun’s surface is opaque to light, the NYUAD scientists used sound waves to probe the interior structure of the supergranules. These sound waves, which are generated by the smaller granules and are everywhere in the sun, have been successfully used in the past in a field known as Helioseismology. By analyzing such a large dataset of supergranules, which were estimated to extend 20,000 […]
Importance Of Link Building In SEO
Link building is still a key tactic in the always-changing fields of digital marketing and search engine optimization (SEO) for raising a website’s profile and visibility. We will examine the importance of link building in SEO, as well as its different facets, recommended practices, and effects on websites and businesses’ online visibility, in this extensive tutorial. Overview of Establishing Links Knowing the Fundamentals In search engine optimization, link building is the practice of obtaining links to your website from other websites. These linkages, also referred to as “backlinks,” act as bridges connecting different areas of the internet. A website that connects to yours is effectively endorsing the quality and authority of your material. The Development of Connection Establishment The process of creating links has advanced significantly since the internet’s inception. In the past, webmasters used deceptive methods to get as many links as they could, and quantity frequently outweighed quality. However, since search engines are now much better at determining the relevancy and quality of connections, it is crucial to use moral and calculated link-building techniques. Links’ Function in Search Engines Complex algorithms are used by search engines such as Google, Bing, and Yahoo to evaluate the authority and relevancy […]
A Deep Dive In The Gaming Industry
To play is fundamentally human. If you can experience something through play, it creates camaraderie. It’s fundamental to who we are. If you are not gaming already, there’s a chance you might be soon. The video game sector is booming and recent data indicates that the gaming sector is currently generating more revenue than the combined film and music industries. The expansion is expected to make the global gaming industry worth $321 billion by 2026, according to PwC’s Global Entertainment and Media Outlook 2022-26. According to a recent study by Microsoft, “The gaming industry is unique and special because it’s the only entertainment medium in the world where you can connect with someone you have never met; you don’t necessarily speak their same language, you’re not in the same time zone, you don’t have the same abilities and (yet) you can achieve something with them. You can actually do something together. The future of gaming is completely interlocked with the cloud. Gaming represents an extremely complex workload. Most people don’t think of it that way. They think, “Oh, it’s a game.” But a technical failure has real consequences. If a video doesn’t load quickly, you restart the video. In gaming, […]
The SEO Conundrum
A heedless dependence on link building is the most frequent cause of search engine result placement failure. Links are not only not everything, but they also mean nothing if they lead to unimportant material. The documents that have the highest relevance score to a given query are used by search engines to determine how to answer it. Relevance is determined by the query terms’ emphasis, repetition, or combination of the two. Search engines generally believe that the document contains the majority of repetition and emphasis. Link citation is considered valuable because of this. Links on the ideal Web would always lead to genuinely valuable content, and link anchor language would always provide a precise and accurate description of the content. Although search engines don’t technically stake their entire reputation on link citation, that is rarely the case in reality. They do try to verify the sources they are linked to. Nevertheless, the fundamental SEO formula is as follows: Repetition * Emphasis * Value = Optimization Many SEOs mistakenly believe that the most crucial ranking indicators are off-page as Value can only exist off the document, but Repetition and Emphasis can occur on or off the document. For this reason, outranking […]
