Mubadala Investment Company, the Abu Dhabi-based investment company, announced its agreement to acquire a minority stake in Nord Anglia Education, a leading international schools organization for $600 million. On the occasion of Emirati Children’s Day, the Abu Dhabi Early Childhood Authority (ECA) is announcing that it is designing an assessment system for the quality of offerings to young children, beyond nurseries and schools. Examples of these offerings include camps, after-school programmes, children’s libraries, parks, playgrounds, children’s museums, cultural centres with dedicated spaces for children, family entertainment centres and play areas. This assessment system is being designed to evaluate and improve the offerings and services available to families, ensuring that children in Abu Dhabi Emirate have access to safe, enriching, and high-quality programmes and experiences. Researchers at NYU Abu Dhabi (NYUAD) have developed an innovative tool that enhances surgeons’ ability to detect and remove cancer cells during cryosurgery, a procedure that uses extreme cold to destroy tumors. This breakthrough technology involves a specialised nanoscale material that illuminates cancer cells under freezing conditions, making them easier to distinguish from healthy tissue and improving surgical precision. Detailed in the study Freezing-Activated Covalent Organic Frameworks for Precise Fluorescence Cryo-Imaging of Cancer Tissue in the journal of the American Chemical Society, the Trabolsi research group at NYUAD designed a unique nanoscale Covalent Organic Framework (nTG-DFP-COF) that responds to extreme cold by increasing its fluorescence. This makes it possible to clearly differentiate between cancerous and healthy tissues during surgery. This advancement not only improves the accuracy and safety of cryosurgical procedures—helping surgeons preserve more healthy tissue while removing cancer cells—but also combines diagnostic and treatment functions into one platform. A team of researchers at NYU Abu Dhabi has uncovered how genetic and lifestyle factors influence immune responses to malaria in children from two large West African ethnic groups. The study found that children from the Fulani group have a distinct immune response to malaria than their Mossi counterparts, with key differences in immune cell activity offering greater protection. Malaria susceptibility varies among African ethnic groups, but the reasons behind these differences have remained unclear. Africa has the world’s greatest genetic and environmental diversity, which affect disease susceptibility, yet its populations are underrepresented in genomic research. The Fulani, a nomadic group with a culture of herding and a dietary reliance on livestock-sourced foods, such as milk, have long been observed to have better protection against malaria compared to other groups. In their study, Single-cell Transcriptomics Reveals Inter-ethnic Variation in Immune Response to Falciparum Malaria, published in the American Journal of Human Genetics, NYUAD researchers and collaborators in Burkina Faso analyzed immune cells from 126 children—comparing the less malaria susceptible Fulani group with the more-susceptible Mossi group. Abu Dhabi University’s (ADU) College of Engineering hosted its 4th Annual STEMProgramming Competition,providing school students with the opportunity to tackle pressing engineering and technology challenges. This competition aligns with ADU’s commitment to empowering future innovators and supporting the UAE’s National Program for Coders, established by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai. The Art Gallery at NYU Abu Dhabi (NYUAD) has announced that it will extend Between the Tides: A Gulf Quinquennial, now open through April 20, 2025. This inaugural quinquennial exhibition has garnered significant attention, bringing together a range of works by artists from across the Gulf and offering different perspectives on cultural, social, and environmental themes. The Abu Dhabi Investment Office (ADIO), in collaboration with the Abu Dhabi Department of Education and Knowledge (ADEK) and a multinational consortium led by Plenary Group and BESIX Group, today inaugurated three state-of-the-art schools in Abu Dhabi’s Zayed City. The newly inaugurated educational facilities represent the first time that school infrastructure has been developed in the UAE under a public-private partnership (PPP) model. Completed on schedule and within budget, the project has significantly enhanced Abu Dhabi’s educational landscape by ensuring additional capacity for 5,360 students, from kindergarten to Grade 12, for the 2024-2025 academic year and beyond. Instrumental to the project’s successful realisation, ADEK played a pivotal role in ensuring that the project met the highest standards of design, and material and equipment selection. Brighton College Al Ain pupils today are celebrating excellent GCSE results, with an even higher percentage of Grade 9s being awarded to pupils compared to last year. Consistently included in the UAE’s best-performing schools list, one in every four GCSE exams taken this year by Brighton College Al Ain pupils resulted in a top Grade 9, with 40% awarded 9-8 Grades.  The College’s impressive overall value-added score of +0.9 further highlights the significant progress pupils have made, with each pupil’s performance exceeding internationally benchmarked expectations by a full grade. A team of researchers at NYU Abu Dhabi, led by Professor Sehamuddin Galadari, has discovered that the tumor suppressor protein Prostate apoptosis response-4 (Par-4) can cause a unique type of cell death called ferroptosis in human glioblastoma – the most common and aggressive type of brain tumor – while sparing healthy cells. This new understanding has the potential to inform the development of novel treatments for various hard-to-treat cancers and neurodegenerative diseases. Ferroptosis is triggered by the iron-mediated production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and subsequent lipid peroxidation, which plays a crucial role in shrinking cancerous tumors. This is the first time that Par-4, already known for killing cancer cells through apoptosis – a form of programmed cell death – has been shown to promote ferroptosis in glioblastoma cells. The tumor suppressor protein Par-4 is widely expressed across species, but is often reduced, mutated, or inactivated in the presence of various cancers.
