NYU Abu Dhabi (NYUAD) senior Sussan Garcia has received a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship that will support her to move to South Korea in 2021 to teach English.
Born and raised in New York, Garcia is majoring in Arab Crossroads Studies with a minor in Political Science. She founded the Society of International Affairs at NYUAD and is a leader of STRIVE, a student program that works with communities in Abu Dhabi to improve their conversational English skills. She also volunteered as an English tutor for migrant high schoolers during her study away year. Garcia is the founder of The CentAm Collective, a community-building platform for the international Central American diaspora, and the co-host of Central American Voices podcast.
Garcia said: “South Korea is a place I have always wanted to learn more about, ever since I met my first-year roommate at NYUAD, who is now one of my best friends. She introduced me to South Korean food, told me stories of holidays in South Korea, and helped me study the Korean language.
I look forward to pursuing my interest in a part of the world that I haven’t had much exposure to previously, complementing the experience I have gained at NYUAD and preparing me for a career in international policy. I am excited to delve into the South Korean life with the resources that the Fulbright program offers, which include a homestay and intensive language training.”
The Fulbright English Teaching Assistant (ETA) is part of the Fulbright Program, the flagship international educational exchange program sponsored by the US government and designed to build lasting connections between the people of the United States and other countries. Fulbright ETAs are placed in classrooms abroad to provide assistance to the local English teachers, while serving as cultural ambassadors for the US.
