NYU Abu Dhabi’s Center for Astrophysics and Space Science (CASS) has released Nova of Celestoria, a new young adult graphic novel that combines scientific concepts with imaginative storytelling. Written by student authors Syed Fahad Rizwan (Class of 2025) and Zhiyu Solstice Luo (Class of 2024), the book is aimed at readers aged 17+, and introduces space science through an engaging narrative and vivid illustrations.
The story follows Nova, a teenager whose passion for stargazing sets off a series of events that pull him into a space mission with high stakes. When he picks up a mysterious signal from the stars, Nova is drawn into a puzzle that leads far beyond his classroom. As he searches for answers, he teams up with a surprising group of allies, including a cat, to uncover hidden truths and face challenges bigger than anything he’s known before. The project was developed over two years as part of an interdisciplinary collaboration led by Director of CASS Andrea V. Macciò and Outreach Manager Bianca Arkeen.
“Nova of Celestoria is more than a story; it’s a way to open the door to astrophysics for a wider audience,” said Professor Macciò. “Our goal is to make space science accessible, spark curiosity, and inspire the next generation of space leaders. We’re especially proud that this is a student-led project; it reflects the creativity and talent of our community.”
An Arabic edition, edited by Research Associate Moe Abbas and translated by Abu Bakr, will launch in Fall 2025. Nova of Celestoria will be available at major bookstores including Magrudy’s and Kinokuniya across the UAE from August 1, 2025.
